Before settlers named it Yendi, the town was called Naa-Ya ("chief's" city in Dagomba), due to its status as Dagomba capital and holiday resort for the king. The Dagomba territory steadily lost influence in the region from the early 17th century onwards, becoming a satellite of the Ashanti kingdom from 1750 onwards. Then, during colonization, the territory was divided between the Germans and the English. Here, you can visit the Naa-Ya Palace, a fine example of Moorish and Sudanese architecture, in exchange for kola nuts or a small gift. If you want to stay here, look no further than the four comfortable and inexpensive rooms of the Extra Lodge.
