"Bosumtwi" literally means "God's antelope" in Ashanti. The lake is located some 30 km south of Kumasi. According to legend, it was once a vast forest. One day, a brave local hunter shot an antelope, which jumped into a pond just before the fatal shot. The hunter was unable to retrieve his prey and turned back. From then on, the water began to invade the forest at an astonishing speed. Long after the antelope's death, a traditional priest explained that the deceased animal was inhabited by the spirit of the Almighty and therefore could not be captured. The spirit of the antelope is still present in the abysses of the lake, and forbids anyone to carve wood. From a rational point of view, scientists have demonstrated that the lake level rose a long time ago, which explains the presence of tree trunks inside Bosumtwi. As far as tourism is concerned, the main reason to visit the shores of Lake Bosumtwi is to relax and contemplate. There are a number of charming addresses just a stone's throw from the lake.
