Karlstad is built on the delta of the Klarälven River, which flows into Lake Vänern. This city of about 95,000 inhabitants is best known for the World Rally Championship stage that takes place here every year, but also for its status as the capital of fair trade, and for its opera house, one of the five in Sweden. You won't find any architectural wonders here, but two attractions are worth a stop: the Värmland museum, and the Mariebergsskogen park, a nature reserve and amusement park. However, the city center has a few curiosities such as the statue in the central Stortorget square, which celebrates the pact signed in 1905 that made Sweden and Norway two separate nations. There are also statues of the writer Selma Lagerlöf, the daughter of the country, and Sola, a young waitress with an eternal smile who gave her symbol to the city: a happy sun that is displayed everywhere in Karlstad.
