Parapat is located on the northern shore of Lake Toba, close to the Sipisopiso Strait. It is often used as a starting point for exploring the lake and its surroundings. The region's main town, Parapat has long welcomed tourists in search of peace and fresh air. The town lies on the shores of the lake, opposite the Tuk-Tuk peninsula. Built on the inner flanks of the crater, it boasts a rugged topography that offers lovely views of the lake. Sukarno and Sharir Hadji Salim were placed under house arrest here during the War of Independence, from 1948 to 1949. Tourists arriving in Parapat from Medan are mainly Asians from Malaysia and Singapore.
