Berastagi is planted between two volcanoes, Gunung Sinabung and Gunung Sibayak, which dominate the Batak Karo country. It lies 70 km from Medan at an altitude of 1,400 m. This large town is built along a single axis, the Jl Veteran. On one side, the road leads to Medan; on the other, the left branch of the fork leads to Kabanjahe and Lake Toba. The region derives great prosperity from the export of its market garden produce. Berastagi was the verdant resort of the Dutch from Medan. A few attractive buildings remain. In the evenings, the village is quite lively, with guitarists and singers scattering the notes of their joyful music all over the place. Tugu Perjuangan is the memorial commemorating the struggle between the Bataks and the Dutch. A visit to Berastagi usually includes a hike to the Sibayak volcano, a stop at the hot springs, a visit to the fruit market, the Lumbini Garden Buddhist temple, traditional Batak houses and a short trek to panoramic Gundaling Hill.
