This pretty little village is steeped in folklore and lives in the cult of the national hero Sisingamangaraja, who is buried here. To see his restored palace, you need to go to the village of Bakara (known for its crystal works). The tomb is 2.5 km to the south, on the Sibolga road. Mausoleums topped by statues of the deceased can be seen everywhere. One of the most famous, on Samosir near Ambarita, depicts a policeman threatening you with his revolver. Otherwise, in Balige, you can visit the local market, spend some time on the beach or visit the Batak TB Silalahi museum to learn more about Batak culture.
