With a surface area of 630 km², Samosir is a peninsula that became an island in 1906, when the isthmus was pierced by the Dutch. Tomok is the island's main village, but tourists tend to stay in Tuk-Tuk, a small village with plenty of hotels. Simanindo is home to many cultural attractions. There are no ATMs on the island.
