MUSÉE DE LA MINE DE MAY SAINT-ANDRÉ
Museum presenting the history of the mine and of "Vieux marble" through tools, models and rocks
In the Laize valley, this town, linked by a Roman road to the Gallo-Roman town of Vieux, was famous for its red ore with a high iron content, known as "Vieux marble", which is found in the Maison du grand péristyle. From 1893 to 1968, its extraction provided a livelihood for up to 900 people, divided between the quarry and the surrounding towns. The museum retraces the history of the mine through a scale model, miners' tools and a collection of Jurassic rocks and fossils.
