The town of Maumere is not the most interesting in Flores, but it's a good starting (or arrival) point, with its airport offering relatively good air connections. Most travellers to Flores arrive in Maumere by plane or boat, and continue to Labuan Bajo by land (or vice versa). Few travellers attempt the adventure further east - and there are not many guides there either. One of Maumere's main sights was the church that stood at the port's exit. It had to be razed to the ground, having been hit by a wave that was higher than its steeple.
