Bajawa is a small mountain town that only came under Dutch rule in 1907... The town, criss-crossed by streets passing between wooden and corrugated iron houses, is not extraordinary (although it does boast the cleanest market on the island), but the surrounding area is very interesting for anthropology buffs. The surrounding villages, especially the traditional one of Bena, are fascinating. And note that during the Christmas season, festivities are organized here, including a grand ceremony that usually begins on Boxing Day. Bajawa is an obligatory stopover on the way to Flores.
