40 km south of Surabaya, on the road to Malang, this town is renowned for its prestigious East Javanese ballets. Performances take place outdoors at the Candra Wilwatika Theater, on the second and fourth weeks from June to November. They are based on the stories of the Ramayana. The stage is set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Pananggungan, providing an enchanting experience for the audience. Nestled at the foot of the sacred Gunung Pananggungan mountain, the theater was inaugurated in 1971 during the first International Ramayana Festival. It has a capacity of up to 10,000 spectators.
