For 700 years Ribe has been the venue for the largest annual Viking market. The street along the river, now known as Sct. Nicolajgade, was in the 9th century the main artery of a fair where craftsmen and merchants from Scandinavia, England, the Frankish kingdom, Spain and Byzantium set up their stalls.
