DEN GAMLE BY
A museum with a pleasant setting that lets you discover the Denmark of yesteryear through houses from all over the country.
Den Gamle By is an open-air museum, where you can discover the Denmark of the past. Since 1914, more than 75 houses from all over the country have been moved from their original sites and reassembled in this park in Aarhus. The oldest dates from the Renaissance, the most recent from the First World War. For a long time, old houses have been disregarded in Denmark, and in some cities they were demolished rather than preserved, so much so that some owners preferred to give them to this institution in order to ensure their durability.
A few years ago, one could walk freely on the site but the visits of the houses were only done with a guide. Due to the growing success of Den Gamle By, a new formula was put in place: one can freely enter all the houses, but each room is protected by a glass or a plexiglas. Each interior is reconstructed with authentic pieces corresponding to the style and period of the house. Children love it! A journey through time, from the old school to the post office, passing by the bookstore and the bakery where you can buy "for real".
Many craftsmen's workshops are also in operation. The setting is very pleasant, with its cobbled streets, its inner courtyards, its botanical garden. You can have lunch on the spot (in the Simonsens garden, cafeteria and bandstand in the summer, or all year round at the Prins Ferdinand restaurant). You can also have a picnic in the courtyard of Madkassen.
L'endroit est vraiment fascinant surtout le quartier des 70s.
Un must dans la région !
You enter the houses and their recreated interior attracts you. You can see some craftsmen at work. In the streets, horse-drawn carriages should be avoided!
