A magical place dedicated to art that is a must to visit, even in bad weather! A museum as beautiful outside as it is inside.

What a fabulous museum Louisiana is! Modern art immersed in nature, thanks to architecture as imaginative as it is functional. The museum was built on a small cliff overlooking the Øresund in a 19th-century bourgeois estate. In 1958, the owner Knud W. Jensen (d. 2000) decided to house his personal collection of 20th-century painting greats: Picasso was represented by Francis Bacon and Kusama, Danish cubism by Lundstrøm, abstract painting by Richard Mortensen and Asger Jorn, pop art by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and of course Per Kirkeby.

To build the museum, he commissioned architects Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert. A maze of glass corridors snaked through the natural surroundings, leading to rooms with a close connection to the outside world, as seen in the superb Giacometti room overlooking the Humlebæk pond. Today, it is Denmark's most visited museum. Understandably, you can devote a good half-day to exploring it and enjoying the superb sculpture garden featuring Henry Moore, César, Jean Tinguely and Alexander Calder, to name but a few.

And don't overlook the creative children's area, the cosy fireplace area or the superb terrace of the café-restaurant for a gourmet break, or the boutique-library filled with great souvenir ideas. Evening visits thanks to late-night opening hours.
