HØJBRO PLADS
This vast square was laid out after the fire of 1795, the fashion was for open spaces. However, it was mainly designed to serve as a firebreak, as fires are very frequent in Copenhagen. It connects the Amagertorv Canal with Slotsholmen. It may look a bit empty, except for the imposing statue of the city's founder, Bishop Absalon. Mounted on a spirited horse, he holds up an axe and turns towards Christianborg Palace, where his castle was founded in 1167. The 1902 work is signed with the name of the sculptor Vilhelm Bissen.
