Petit Futé's opinion on NATIONAL MUSEUM OF DENMARK (NATIONALMUSEET)

Vintage plate 2020

This huge museum occupies a whole block framed by Vester Voldgade, Frederiksholms Kanal, Stormgade and Ny Vestergade where the entrance is located. The entrance opens onto a large atrium surrounded by two floors of galleries. To the left of this first hall, the Egmont Hall is dedicated to temporary exhibitions. The other rooms are dedicated to ethnographic collections. On the right, the gardens of the palace, crossed by a glass corridor, are surrounded by three levels of galleries. In short, there is enough room to spend a whole day exploring it thoroughly. Nevertheless, the richness and variety of the collections are so dense that it is better to visit in several visits or to target your interests.

The rooms on the ground floor present the archaeology of Denmark and the Viking epic. Unique and exceptional pieces are exhibited: the Trundholm solar chariot, a miniature bronze cult chariot, discovered in 1902 by a farmer in the Trundholm swamp in North Zealand, it is dated to the first Bronze Age, i.e. around 1400 BC; the Gudenstrup cauldron dating from the first century BC, which was found in 1891 in a peat bog in Jutland. It is made of 13 silver plates decorated with Celtic mythological scenes. Impressive by its size, it measures 42 cm high and has a diameter of 69 cm; the Kingigtorssuaq Runic Stone found in 1824 in a cairn on the island of Kingigtortagdlit in West Greenland. On this stone are Viking inscriptions probably dating from the 13th century; or the grave of Egtved's Daughter (Egtvedpigen), a young woman who died around 1370 BC at the age of 16-18, whose mummified body was found in a burial mound with clothes and offerings.

The floor deals with the history of modern times and the colonial era. Knights' armour, jewellery, altarpieces. Reconstruction of the Aalborg grocery store from 1602, with its coffered ceilings and wooden sculptures. Meet walrus hunters and slave traders. Discover the life of the Danes who left for the colonies: India, West Africa or Greenland! Another department just as full of sensational objects: the bedroom of King Frederik III. A cabinet of curiosities for this enthusiast of ingenious objects testifying to the know-how and knowledge of his time, as well as exotic objects from the four corners of the world.
