Fortified island, built between 1890 and 1894, featuring a fortress that once housed up to 800 soldiers.
Fortified island abandoned by the military, Middelgrunden and its fort were built between 1890 and 1894. The army deserted it in 1984! Much larger than Trekroner, the fortress housed up to 800 soldiers. You can visit the protective chambers built to resist chemical and bacteriological weapons during the Cold War. Nowadays, the islet is next to an offshore wind farm. You can come and have a picnic (baskets are sold at the fort's café), or dine by candlelight in the restaurant. Or you can even sleep there!
