11-hectare zoo located between Frederiksberg and Søndermarken parks, home to 3,500 animals of over 200 species.
3,500 animals of more than 200 species frolic in fairly comfortable enclosures. The zoo covers an area of 11 ha and is situated between Frederiksberg and Søndermarken, which are connected by an underground tunnel. Founded in 1859 by the ornithologist Niels Kjærbølling, it is one of the oldest zoos in Europe and at the same time one of the most modern in the world. In 2008, Norman Foster signed the new Asian Elephant House and in 2013 the Arctic Ring will open for his polar bear couple. This installation allows these animals to be observed through a water tunnel.

On y trouve une grande richesse d'animaux que l'on peut voir de très près, notamment les kangourous et les phoques.

Ayant profité de ma visite pour faire le tour du zoo, j’ai été profondément choquée et attristée par les conditions catastrophiques dans lesquelles vivent les animaux : enclos minuscules, forte densité de population sur une surface réduite, aménagements ne leur offrant aucune intimité face aux visiteurs extrêmement proches…
L’ours polaire semblait particulièrement mal en point et stressé, haletant et tournant sans cesse en rond, à l’image d’autres espèces qui n’ont rien à faire dans un tel climat.
Un zoo-spectacle. Comment est-ce possible que cela existe encore aujourd’hui ? Comment est-ce possible d’exposer des animaux à la souffrance en toute impunité ?
J’en ai encore la nausée.
C’est une honte.
