On the plain in the far northeast of Moldova and the country, the town of Botoşani (population 90,000) is completely off the tourist map. And for good reason! However, the town center still boasts a number of fine 17th and 18th century houses and architecturally interesting buildings (theater, Casa Silion, Casa Bolfosu). It's also a city where culture continues to play an important role, as several figures of Romanian arts and letters (Eminescu, Enescu, Iorga...) were born here.
