72 km southwest of Craiova, this city on the Danube is above all a crossing point to Vidin and Bulgaria. For a long time we crossed the river by ferry, but today a bridge is being completed to connect the two communities. The successive Romanian and Bulgarian Governments have finally agreed. The city itself has little to offer visitors, if it is its small museum of Art and local Ethnography. The centre is organised around the inevitable culture house, a lively market in the morning and a memorial. Not far away, on the road to Bechet, you will find a beautiful old forest (Pâdurea Ciumela) and, for ornithologists, the reserve of Ciupercenii, whose name evokes mushrooms.
