BIXIGA SQUADRON
Beautiful Bixiga staircase, with 84 steps and a height of 16 m, linking the upper part of the district to the lower part
The beautiful Bixiga staircase, with its 84 steps and 16-metre height, links the upper part of the district (Rua dos Ingleses) to the lower part (Rua Treze de Maio), where many of the cantinas and the antiques market are located. Symbolically, this staircase, which has a certain air of the "Butte Montmartre", was to unite the more working-class social classes of the lower quarter, often of Italian origin, with the more privileged social classes living in the upper quarter, after the city had built affluent housing estates there on a former English golf course.
