PARQUE DA INDEPENDÊNCIA
Beautiful park in the Ipiranga district, home to an imposing Monumento à Independência do Brasil and a zoological museum
This beautiful park, inaugurated in 1988, is located in the Ipiranga district, a watercourse dear to the Paulists, since it was here that Dom Pedro I, Brazil's first emperor, proclaimed the country's independence in 1822, a famous episode known as the "cry of Ipiranga". The park bears his name and, in addition to the Ipiranga stream, visitors can admire the imposing Monumento à Independência do Brasil - whose crypt contains the remains of Dom Pedro - the vast Museu do Ipiranga on the history of the country and the small Casa do Grito. There's also a zoological museum to the south.
