Inaugurated in 1899, this synagogue is Cologne's main Jewish place of worship. It is also one of the largest synagogues in Germany today. During Kristallnacht, it was severely damaged, burnt down and looted. By 1945, however, survivors were worshipping in the rubble. Rebuilt and reopened in 1959, it is a symbol of Jewish renewal after the Second World War. Its neo-Romanesque style, with a large central dome, makes it an architecturally interesting building. It can accommodate 1400 worshippers.
