This mid-range mountain range is East Germany's most popular, the green and bucolic heart of the region
This is East Germany's most popular mid-range mountain range, the green and bucolic heart of the region. A hiker's paradise, the massif is also home to some superb buildings. The narrow massif is 150 km long and 35 km wide. Its highest point is the Grosser Beerberg (982 m), between Ilmenau and Suhl. You can hike to it from the village of Schmücke near Ilmenau.
The massif stretches from Rudolstadt in the Saale valley to Bad Salzungen in the east.
