FLAMINGO
Calder's 50 ton sculpture with thin metal plates with an arched shape and a bright red color
At the center of the Chicago Federal Center plaza, this Calder sculpture stands out for its arched form and bright red color, contrasting with the strict black lines of Mies van der Rohe's buildings. This stabile (as opposed to mobile), weighing 50 tonnes and composed of thin metal plates, was commissioned by the city in 1974 from the American artist Alexander Calder. It's known as Flamingo, although Calder himself never gave it a name. The sight of it, however, makes it clear why Chicagoans have named it so.
