In the centre of the Chicago Federal Center Square, this sculpture by Calder stands out for its arched shape and bright red colour, right in the middle of the strict black lines of the Mies van der Rohe buildings. This 50-ton stabile (as opposed to the mobile) made of thin metal plates was sponsored by the City of Chicago in 1974 by American artist Alexander Calder. It is called Flamingo (pink flamingo), although Calder himself did not give it a name. However, it is easy to see why the Chicagoans named it that way.
