Travelling along Highway 11, you will pass through a wilderness refuge where the Ojibwe and fur traders stopped. You'll find the same portages, waterfalls and pristine, sparkling lakes that Radisson encountered in the 17th century. Atikokan describes itself as the canoeing capital of Canada. Nearby Quetico Provincial Park is a canoeing paradise. Its 1,500 km of river system provides 100 canoe routes. The Dawson Trail, off Highway 11, runs through the park. It is estimated that 3,500 settlers travelled this route on their way to the Prairies in search of a better future.
