The territory has been occupied for centuries by the Cree, and was used as a fur-trading site by the English in James Bay and the French in Abitibi-Témiscamingue during the colonization period. Matagami, which means "the meeting of the waters" in Cree, was developed through mining. The gateway to the western part of the region, the town is now a nature destination because of its many bodies of water and abundant forest. The Billy-Diamond Highway begins here and provides access to the northern part of the region, including Radisson. The James Bay Eeyou Istchee tourism office is located at km 6.
