Its origins date back to gold mining. Since then, its economy has diversified, and the town of 7,500 has become the largest in Northern Quebec. In summer, you can enjoy the beach, and in winter, snowmobiling and ice fishing. As for festivals, the very popular Baie-James Walleye Festival at the end of June is the biggest fishing tournament in the province. Then in August comes the Festival en Août, where some fifty artists from Northern Quebec perform on an outdoor stage in the heart of downtown. Winter is mostly devoted to snowmobiling events (races, antique snowmobile rides, etc.).
