The historic City Hall and Court House building is constructed of brick and marble from the Kootenay region.
Their architecture was designed by Francis Mawson Rattenbury, one of Nelson's principal architects who built many court houses, and who was also responsible for Parliament and the Empress Hotel in Victoria. In the 1900s, the town of Nelson was the most important city between Winnipeg and Vancouver. Today it lives mainly from tourism. The historic City Hall and Court House are constructed of brick and marble from the Kootenay region. Many buildings in the city are made of marble.
