Military construction built by the Hudson's Bay Company to protect the residents of the region.
This military structure, built by the Hudson's Bay Company in 1853 and saved many times from destruction, provided protection for the residents of the Nanaimo area. A military post, prison and now a museum of local history, the "bastion" also serves as a tourist information centre during the season. Nanaimo's unique bastion is the oldest structure in the city, recognized as a symbol and protected as heritage.
