SAINT AUGUSTINE'S MONASTERY
A huge former monastery that fell into disrepair in 1835 when the old city of Goa lost its title of capital
Little remains today of this huge former monastery, which was abandoned in 1835 when Goa-la-Vieille lost its title of capital. Founded by the Order of Saint Augustine, the church was consecrated in 1602 and dedicated to Our Lady of Grace. It was one of the most important buildings in Goa Velha. Today, half of the 46-metre-high bell tower remains. The view of the surrounding countryside from the top of the hill is magnificent.
