Even before the arrival of the Portuguese, old Goa(Goa Velha in Portuguese) was a prosperous city and the second capital of the Adil Shahi dynasty of Bijapur. At that time, it was surrounded by fortified walls, towers and moats, and had many temples and mosques, as well as the great palace of Adil Shah. All these monuments have now disappeared, except for a fragment of the palace gate. What remains dates from the Portuguese period. During the Portuguese reign, the city grew rapidly in size and splendor until it could rival Lisbon itself. After the transfer of the seat of power to Panjim in 1843 and the repression by the religious orders in 1835, the city was abandoned. Today, it is a small village surrounded by huge churches and convents, built during the city's golden age, which attract visitors from all over the world. The site of Old Goa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some of these monuments are still active, others have become museums maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India.
