SHANTI STUPA
Stupa on top of a small hill built by the Japanese to symbolize peace, a place of pilgrimage with a beautiful view.
Situated at an altitude of 4,625 metres, high up in the Chansgpa district, it's the first building you see when arriving from the airport. Standing atop a small hill, it was built by the Japanese to symbolize world peace(shanti). It's a pilgrimage site from which you can contemplate the city, the mountains and, in the distance, Stok Kangri. The 15-minute climb up the steep staircase is not recommended for travelers new to Leh. It's best to get there at the end of the day, around 5pm, before sunset.
