100 km southeast of Patna. Rajgir was the capital of an empire that later became a major academic and religious center. Buddha spent much of his life here, on Gridhakuta Hill, preaching to the many devotees who came to listen to him. The Japanese have erected a large, immaculate stupa 48 m high on the hill. Many archaeological sites are also visible. The city is mentioned in the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Mahavira, the Jain, is said to have spent 14 retreats here, and Emperor Ashoka died here. Also worth seeing: the Hindu temple with hot springs. This is where you stay when visiting Nalanda.
