55 km north of Patna. Vaishali is the birthplace of Mahavira, one of the Jain tirthankaras, and above all a historic Buddhist site. Buddha came to this site several times after his enlightenment to give teachings and hold his rainy-season retreat. It was also at Vaishali that he gave his last sermon. To commemorate him, Ashoka erected a large column on the site, topped by a capital bearing a lion. Many Buddhist monks still wander around the two large brick stupas dating from the 4th century BC. One of them is said to contain relics of Buddha.
