Planina Maglić
This massif is home to Bosnia-Herzegovina's highest point, at 2,386 m altitude. Hiking and superb views of Montenegro.
This massif (Planina Maglić/Планина Маглић) is the highest point in Bosnia-Herzegovina, at 2,386 m above sea level. It lies to the south-east of the Sutjeska National Park, alongside Montenegro and can be reached on foot from the Prijevor hut (19 km south-east of the information center). Its name means "the misty one" because its summit is often hidden by clouds. But the massif actually has two peaks: Veliki Maglić ("the big one"), in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and Crnogorski Maglić ("the Montenegrin one"), right next door, in the neighboring country. The latter is a little higher, between 2,388 and 2,396 m depending on measurements. But it's the Bosnian mountain that's the most popular. On site, the rock that marks the summit is regularly repainted by Bosnian-Serb nationalists in Serbian colors. But the views are grandiose: of the Zelengora massif (2,032 m), to the west and within the Sutjeska park; of the Bioč massif (2,397 m), to the southeast and Montenegro; of Lake Trnovačko (1,517 m) and Mount Trnovački Durmitor (2,242 m), to the south and Montenegro; and a little further south, of the Volujak massif (2,336 m), right on the border. Starting from the Prijevor hut (1,688 m), the 2 km ascent takes 1h30-3h and the return by the same route, 1h-2h. However, it's another 8-hour loop route across the two countries that's more popular: still starting from Prijevor, it passes by both peaks, then by the superb heart-shaped Trnovačko lake, before returning to the refuge.
