This Erekle II street is the former royal square with the last vestiges of the royal palace destroyed during the Persian sacking of 1795.
If you come from the Freedom Square and go down to Khote Abkhazis qucha or Leselidze street, on the left, Erekle II street is lined with very touristy restaurants; some carpet shops mark the beginning. It leads to Erekle II square (Erekle II Moédani). This is the former royal square. A large building, the Hotel de la Monnaie, the "King Rostom Baths" are the last remains of the royal palace destroyed by the Persian sack of 1795.
The immense palace of the Patriarch of the Orthodox Church has been home to the Patriarchate since 1990.
