In addition to being an easy getaway near Abakan in the enchanting setting of the Yenissei and Oglakhty Mountains, the ancient fortress of the same name is a mysterious site of megaliths. There are also fascinating Tagar petroglyphs dating from the 7th to 3rd centuries BC. The place, surrounded by reliefs, is interspersed with steppe landscapes. It's definitely worth the ride. Russia has nominated the site for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
