Here's a mysterious hole in the heart of the Serra da Estrela: the Covão dos Conchos. Situated at an altitude of 1,500 m, this artificial lagoon houses an astonishing bell-shaped spillway, channelling the water towards the Lagoa Comprida. Built in the 1950s, its tunnel extends for 1.5 km. The mouth, overgrown with vegetation, is intriguing. To get there and back, you'll have to follow an unguided 10 km trail from Lagoa Comprida.
