The city of Serpa stands on a promontory located a few kilometers from the left bank of the Guadiana River.
On a promontory a few kilometers from the left bank of the Guadiana stands the town of Serpa, whose toponym dates back to Roman domination 2,000 years ago. The visitor's first impression of Serpa is the grandiose view from its ramparts - where only two of the five original gates remain, the Portas de Moura and de Beja, and the impressive aqueduct with its Italian arches. Inside the city, the street pattern opens onto large squares where traditional, learned and religious architecture stand side by side.
