Its name comes from Castrum veteris, meaning old castle: the town was a military camp in Roman times. Its surroundings are one of the little-known wonders of the Alentejo: the Campo Branco is an immense territory of steppes scorched by the summer sun, home to species of birds rare in Europe and threatened with extinction. In 2017, it was designated a World Biodiversity Reserve by Unesco's International Council on Man and the Biosphere. Known for its impressive Royal Basilica and Feira de Castro, the town makes an excellent stopover to or from the Algarve, and offers an ideal base from which to explore the region.
