FORT DE SÃO JOÃO BAPTISTA
Octagonal defense fort of the 17th century built on the ruins of a monastery by João IV.
It is an octagonal defense fort of the XVII century built during the Restoration War by João IV, on the ruins of a monastery. An artillery of 15 Spanish ships tried to conquer this fort... in vain. It then had an important role in the Peninsular War when it was occupied by the English, and later in the Portuguese Civil War. It was disarmed in 1847, abandoned and then restored for fishing. Today it serves as a refuge for overnight visitors.
