The town of Abrantes resumed in the Moors in 1148 by Afonso Henriques, its defensive walls were consolidated. The Torre de Menagem was completed by Afonso III in 1300. During the War of Restoration and Independence, the castle was re-engineered to adapt to the country's new artillery, becoming an important stronghold in the th century and the headquarters of Royal Knighthood. During the Napoleonic invasions in 1807, the fortress was occupied by General Junot before returning to the hands of the Portuguese.
