A mountain of several meters with artificial caves, with a fascinating labyrinth, and precious paintings
Just a few minutes walk from the center of Maastricht are the caves of St. Peter's Mountain. This 100 m high "mountain" is situated between the valley of the Meuse and the Geer (Jeker). These caves are artificial and result from the extraction of marl which was used to build many buildings in the city and elsewhere (the dome of Utrecht is made of stones from here). A fascinating labyrinth was created, with more than 22,000 galleries, 230 km long in all. The extraction started in the 13th century and we can go back in time with the numerous testimonies of past visitors, we can see a small farm which was not used for a long time. The guides are really gifted to make you spend an unforgettable moment rich in emotions! Some inscriptions date back to 1630, this is where the Mosasaurus was discovered. The highlight of the visit is the walk and the fear that consists in walking in total darkness for a few minutes. The caves in the northern system were home to precious paintings including Rembrandt's The Night Watch during World War II. A special walk explains this fascinating history in detail. An unforgettable walk that lasts about an hour. Please note that the temperature is about 10°C and the humidity is very high, so it is important to cover up and wear good shoes (information at the tourist office). An excursion to do without delay for an experience like no other.
