A remarkable Romanesque church, founded by bishop Bernold, with an exceptional crypt in Utrecht.
Pieter's Church, founded by Bishop Bernold, was built in the Romanesque style between 1000 and 1100, a period characterized by the proliferation of religious buildings in Utrecht. The church has an admirable crypt, a sort of half-underground cellar that forms the choir. Exceptionally, excavation work carried out half a century ago brought to light an intact coffin of red sandstone. This would be that of Bernold, the founder of the building and is exposed in the crypt. The two towers of the church were destroyed by a tornado in 1674.
