DOMTOREN - TOWER OF THE CATHEDRAL OF SAINT MARTIN
A remarkable tour of St. Martin's Cathedral in Utrecht, a guided tour to discover 2,000 years of history.
The Domtoren is the tower of St. Martin's Cathedral. It is isolated from the latter by an open space (Domplein) which was built in place of the nave which collapsed in 1674. We thus witness the astonishing spectacle of a building comprising on the one hand a tower, on the other hand the choir of a church, but without a main nave. The choir is still used as a church and some services of the Reformed Church still take place there. The tower became the property of the city of Utrecht. With a height of 112 m, it was for more than six hundred years the highest building in the country before the new buildings in Rotterdam took its place. It is composed of three superimposed parts, and a passage allows bicycles to pass underneath. In the middle part, the clock face shines. Finally, at the top (after 465 steps), well hidden but, even from a distance, very present, the carillon will remind you of its game that repeats every quarter of an hour. Short at the quarter hour, it becomes longer at the half hour. The visit by the stairs lasts about 1 hour while the one by the stairs lasts 30 minutes, it's up to you, we naturally prefer the steps! Guided tours around the tower will take you through 2,000 years of history. These tours are also available in English, French will wait. The tower is currently being renovated but it is still possible to visit it.
