MARITIEM MUSEUM ROTTERDAM - MARITIME MUSEUM
A large modern building with a triangular shape that houses an interesting museum with an exhibition dedicated to navigation
We are standing here on the Leuvehaven dock, the city's first port. A large, modern, triangular building houses this interesting museum. On the first floor there is an interesting permanent exhibition on shipping and inland navigation, with a special mention for the many models on display, while other, more occasional events take place in the rest of the space. You will also find a library, a reading room, a small store and a specialized bookshop, all in a rather friendly atmosphere. The museum also intends to introduce young people to the pleasures of navigation and even allows them to pilot a real ship in the harbor. But above all, it is only the first element of a much more original whole. Note the presence of the former armored ship of the Royal Navy, recently refurbished and which allows to admire the life on board as it was done in the 19th century. For children from 4 to 12 years old, the museum has an exhibition specially adapted to them, entitled Professor Plons (Professor Plouf). The museum also has an outdoor section. With its twenty ships moored along Leuvehaven that can be visited freely, with its docks featuring various machines and cranes, from the most archaic to the most modern, used for the transshipment of ships, this place has more of a small port than a museum.
