DEPOT BOIJMANS VAN BEUNINGEN
39 meter high building, an incredible and unique project that offers the public access to the repository of the Boijmans van Beuningen museum
This fabulous building, the work of the Rotterdam architectural firm MVRDV, is an incredible and unique project: it is to offer the public access to the repository (thus the collections that cannot be exhibited) of the Boijmans van Beuningen museum, which is currently closed for 7 years. The 39-meter high building has already (even under construction) become an icon of the city with its slender base, as if placed on the level of the Museumpark. The Depot will provide access to 151,000 art objects that are simply stored (i.e. not displayed) and will also provide access to restoration and conservation activities. The building comprises 11 depots to which access is possible for a limited time and in groups of up to 11 people. On 7 floors, this repository already promises to be an incredible success. From the outside, the repository is an imposing complex covered with mirrors, which allows the entire city to be reflected on the surface in an unprecedented way. After the Markthal, MVRDV has undoubtedly signed another Rotterdam classic. Of note, the roof will host a magnificent urban terrace and restaurant. The terrace is simply incredible and invites travel and poetry. The restaurant is run by renowned chef Jim de Jong, a Rotterdam native and fan of vegan and local cuisine. The depot is an absolutely unique and beautiful place. If there was only one cultural place to see in Rotterdam, it would probably be it. Plus, the place is great for fans of selfies and striking photos.
