The port named after Sir Frederick Richards, commander of the Naval Forces during the Anglo-Boer War, was the Theatre of Two Exploits. First of all, that of John Dunn, the White Zulu before the age of Johnny Clegg (see Musée Museum), which drew here a seven-metre crocodile, thus establishing an unparalleled record. Then the long race of Huberta, part of these marshes in 1928 to reach a few years later King William's Town; Huberta was a hippopotamus lady. Richards Bay is above all an industrial port now twinned with Empangeni (www.richardsbayminerals.co.za), the country's first deep water port. So much to say that charm is not necessarily an appointment. But the high attendance of businessmen has led to the development of all trade-related services: rental of cars, restaurants, shops, travel agencies, etc. It is a convenient entrance door for quick access to Maputaland or animal reserves.
