The port named after Sir Frederick Richards, commander of the Naval Forces during the Anglo-Boer War, was the Theatre of Two Exploits. First of all, that of John Dunn, the White Zulu before the age of Johnny Clegg (see Musée Museum), which drew here a seven-metre crocodile, thus establishing an unparalleled record. Then the long race of Huberta, part of these marshes in 1928 to reach a few years later King William's Town; Huberta was a hippopotamus lady. Richards Bay is above all an industrial port now twinned with Empangeni (www.richardsbayminerals.co.za), the country's first deep water port.
